I'm a 31 year old man with two incredible children and a beautiful wife. I own and operate a very successful Asphalt Sealcoating and Asphalt Repair company out of Montreal, Quebec. I was 21 years old when I first thought about starting an asphalt company, fresh out of college with not the slightest idea of what to do next.
I'm a do-it-yourself kinda guy but I didn't have the knowledge or "how to" skills to put anything into action. I knew from the start I wanted to work for myself and I knew it had to be doing something outside.
I read a post on a landscaping forum about a small company helping people start up a sealcoating business. I decided to give the company a call to see what I could find out, I figured I didn't have anything to lose. One of the best decisions I have ever made. I remember it like it was yesterday. I spoke to Judd, the owner himself. I found out very quickly that this person was much like me. I spent well over an hour on the phone with Judd that day. After I hung up with him I couldn't decide if this guy was the world's most brilliant sales man or if there was actually still people out there who really wanted to help other people become successful with nothing in return. In one hour I went from not having the slightest idea about maintaining asphalt to having the confidence that I could actually do this. Judd emailed me over a few courses that he offers on his site for free, along with a marketing package.
If I could recommend just one thing to anyone looking to start out it would be those courses and the marketing package, I still to this day go back and read them.
Within 3 days I called Judd back, this time I was ready to soak in what he had to say, I knew that I could do this and I was ready to listen and make it happen. He again amazed me, it blew my mind to think that someone just like me had so much knowledge to offer and he never once asked for anything in return, for all he knew I could just be taking his info and going elsewhere. Judd took the time to answer all of my questions over and over.
> Within 3 weeks my decision was clear and I was ready. I ended up taking out a small loan from my bank and calling Judd that day, he even recommended what type of truck I'd be best with. That very day I purchased a used Ford, which you can see pictured here. Judd set me up with everything I needed to do both the sealcoating and crack repair. My package deal came with the AK220 spray system with a transfer kit, pallet of sealer, 4 boxes of crack filler, 6HP blower, and an AK10. I was a bit surprised that everything showed up at my home within 6 days, not only was the delivery quick but the equipment looked even better than it did on the site. I used the advice Judd gives in the courses and marketing package for advertizing, I hired a semi-retired sales man and a young kid who was looking for a summer job. That was when we turned into a real asphalt sealcoating business, Imperial Asphalt Maintenance.
Our equipment showed up on the Thursday, we sealer our first job that Saturday. Using the equipment was the greatest part; it was so easy to operate and worked exactly how the site said it would. Our first job was a success and while doing that job our sales rep sold 4 other jobs on that street before we could realize that we were actually doing this we had jobs booked for the Sunday and Monday. We had completely paid off all the asphalt equipment within 3 weeks and the truck within 8 weeks. I couldn't believe how simple it really was. Out of nowhere we started getting businesses calling us to seal their commercial parking lot, that's when we knew it was time for a second truck. We ended up going with the Ak470 this time around, we figured that with all the commercial parking lots it didn't make sense to keep filling up the 220. Our crew grew to 6 that summer and we ended up calling Judd back for a hot box and a 30 melter holder. We're still going strong today and still ordering our sealer and crack filler from Asphalt Kingdom. I couldn't imagine going anywhere else to purchase it.
When you take a chance in life like that you just never know what will happen. I'm not a risk taker but there was something about Judd and Asphalt Kingdom that just told me this was going to work out and that's exactly what it did. Thank you Judd and Asphalt Kingdom for giving me the tools to build a successful asphalt sealcoating business! I would not be where I am today if it wasn't for these guys.
